October in Upcountry Maui: Discover the Connection Between Cacao and Coffee at Maui Chocolate and Coffee Tours

Halloween display with jack-o'-lantern, cacao pods, coffee mug, and tropical farm background.

October is a beautiful time to explore Upcountry Maui, and there is no better way to experience the agricultural side of the island than by visiting a working farm on the slopes of Haleakalā.

At Maui Chocolate and Coffee Tours at Kupa’a Farms, guests are invited behind the scenes to discover where chocolate and coffee begin — not in a package or a café, but as fruit growing on trees.

Our private farm tours combine Maui chocolate, Hawaii coffee, cacao, agriculture, history, and hands-on experiences for an unforgettable Upcountry Maui adventure.

Discover Where Chocolate and Coffee Begin

Did you know that both cacao and coffee begin as fruit?

During your Maui Chocolate and Coffee Tour, you’ll walk through the cacao and coffee orchards and learn how these tropical crops are grown, harvested, processed, and transformed into the chocolate and coffee we know and love.

Our tour gives you an opportunity to see the plants up close and learn about the unique growing conditions of Upcountry Maui.

Located at approximately 1,900 feet on the slopes of Haleakalā, Kupa’a Farms offers a very different perspective of Maui — one surrounded by agriculture, fresh mountain air, and sweeping views.

October on the Cacao Farm

October is an exciting time in the cacao orchard.

Cacao trees can have flowers and developing fruit at the same time, making a walk through the orchard a fascinating look at the different stages of the cacao-growing cycle.

Look closely and you may spot tiny cacao blossoms growing directly from the trunk and branches of the trees. Eventually, those delicate flowers can develop into the colorful cacao pods that contain the beans used to make chocolate.

You’ll also learn about Gliricidia, often referred to as the “mother tree” to cacao. These companion trees can help provide protection from wind and intense sunlight while creating a more supportive environment for young cacao trees.

A Taste of Maui Coffee

Coffee is another important part of our farm story.

Our coffee trees produce cherries that change color as they ripen. During the tour, you’ll learn how coffee cherries are harvested and processed before eventually becoming the roasted coffee in your cup.

And, of course, you’ll have the opportunity to taste 100% Maui-grown coffee.

Hawaii has a unique place in the coffee world, and Maui-grown coffee offers visitors a chance to taste coffee grown right here on the island.

A Hands-On Chocolate Experience

Our tour isn’t simply about looking at cacao trees.

Guests have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on Mayan ceremonial cacao drink experience, explore the history of chocolate, and taste chocolates representing different origins and chocolate makers.

You’ll discover how chocolate has traveled through cultures and centuries — from cacao’s origins to the many forms of chocolate enjoyed around the world today.

It’s an experience designed for chocolate lovers, coffee lovers, curious travelers, and anyone who wants to learn more about where their food comes from.

And Yes… There Are Animals!

Did we mention the animals?

A visit to Kupa’a Farms wouldn’t be complete without meeting some of the farm’s residents. Depending on the day, you may encounter chickens, ducks, goats, sheep, cows, cats, dogs, and even Makani, our pet deer.

The animals are part of what makes visiting a working farm so much fun — especially for families and guests who want an experience that goes beyond the typical Maui sightseeing itinerary.

Experience Upcountry Maui

Many visitors come to Maui for the beaches, snorkeling, and ocean adventures. But Upcountry Maui offers a completely different side of the island.

The slopes of Haleakalā are home to farms, ranches, gardens, coffee, cacao, flowers, and other agricultural treasures.

A visit to Kupa’a Farms gives you the opportunity to slow down, enjoy the scenery, learn something new, and experience Maui agriculture firsthand.

Whether you’re planning a romantic Maui getaway, a family vacation, or a special day with friends, a private farm tour is a wonderful way to add something different to your Maui itinerary.
